  Friends prescription for success

Poppy Cambridge indie outfit My Friend Irma launch their second album, apothecary now, at The Boat Race on Saturday, May 3.

Formed in 1999, My Friend Irma have played more than 100 gigs, honing their songwriting talents in the process.  The double vocal assault of Tom Kendon and Jenni Downs is complemented by the imaginative, psychedelic soundscapes of Guy Henderson's guitar and keyboard lines and the driving rhythm section of drummer Dave Morris and bassist Tim Glasswell.
Apothecary Now borrows from the last 40 years of pop's heritage at will, sometimes soulful, occasionally frantically fuzzed up but always catchy and infectious - think rock-pomp era Bowie jamming with Portishead.  The fun and innocence of the Sixties meets the experimentation of the Seventies, with the mix and match culture of the last two decades blending it together.  While variety may be the spice of life, though, the lack of a distinct Irma "sound" might work against them in the long run.

My Friend Irma's first album launch sold out the Boat Race, so with their reputation as an energetic and enthusiastic live band and a glass of bubbly on offer to anyone arriving before 8.30pm there's plenty of reason to get there early.
