- First up on the
night were My Friend Irma whose
vociferous supporters won them
the audience vote and £400.
-
- Although the lead
guitar and female singer were
sometimes very hard to hear, the
band's overall sound was a bit
more engaging than before, which
made it a little easier to
appreciate their energetic,
rockier version of Prefab Sprout
/ Deacon Blue. But only a little.

There
is really no excuse to miss the final of
the 1999 Cambridge Red Stripe Band
Competition at the Junction on
Wednesday... DAN KING looks at
the bands competing for the title... |
|
|
- First up on the
night will be the last band to
play in the heats, My
Friend Irma, who made it
through by virtue of winning the
most audience votes over the four
weeks.
-
- If the number of
fans you had was a barometer for
how good you were, then the
Cambridge five-piece would be
laughing, and they do have
undeniable stage charisma and
energy, plus an evident
bucketload of self-belief.
-
- The boy/girl
partnership works well and their
female vocalist is one of the
best of the competition, but
there is the suspicion that style
is covering up lack of substance
in their rock/pop, 70s-edged
sound.
