First up on the night were My Friend Irma whose vociferous supporters won them the audience vote and £400.
 
Although the lead guitar and female singer were sometimes very hard to hear, the band's overall sound was a bit more engaging than before, which made it a little easier to appreciate their energetic, rockier version of Prefab Sprout / Deacon Blue. But only a little.

  The Junction, March 1999   There is really no excuse to miss the final of the 1999 Cambridge Red Stripe Band Competition at the Junction on Wednesday... DAN KING looks at the bands competing for the title...  
 
First up on the night will be the last band to play in the heats, My Friend Irma, who made it through by virtue of winning the most audience votes over the four weeks.
 
If the number of fans you had was a barometer for how good you were, then the Cambridge five-piece would be laughing, and they do have undeniable stage charisma and energy, plus an evident bucketload of self-belief.
 
The boy/girl partnership works well and their female vocalist is one of the best of the competition, but there is the suspicion that style is covering up lack of substance in their rock/pop, 70s-edged sound.
